Xylitol in Supplements: A Hidden Danger for Dogs
Harmless for people in supplement amounts, dangerous for dogs in small ones. A label check every pet owner should make.
Why a sugar-free supplement can poison a dog
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used in sugar-free gum, toothpaste, syrups and many liquid supplements. In people it is absorbed slowly and barely affects insulin. In dogs it is absorbed quickly and triggers a large insulin release, which can drop blood sugar dangerously within an hour. Some dogs also develop acute liver failure [1].
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Weakness, wobbling or lethargy
- Trembling or seizures
- Collapse
Signs can appear within 30 to 60 minutes, or later if liver injury develops. Call a veterinarian or an animal poison line at once, even if the dog seems fine.
Keeping supplements pet-safe
- Read "other ingredients" on every liquid, gummy and chewable supplement.
- Store bottles in closed cupboards, not on low tables or in handbags.
- Wipe up drips from droppers straight away.
- Dispose of empty bottles where a dog cannot chew them.
Olivaro drops list xylitol in their base, as do many sugar-free liquids. Cats appear less affected, but the safest rule is to keep all supplements away from every pet [2].
